Essential Termite Inspection Tools & Equipment

Termite Inspection Tools

When conducting a termite inspection, relying solely on a visual assessment is not enough as termite damage is often hidden. To ensure a comprehensive and accurate inspection, it’s essential to utilise advanced techniques and tools. Here are some key pieces of termite detection equipment every professional should have in their toolkit!

powerful torch, whether handheld or worn as a headlamp, is crucial for inspecting all spaces from interiors to subfloors for mud tubes and other evidence of termite activity – pay close attention to areas like skirting boards, cornices, the underside of floorboards and floor joists.

Dongers, also known as timber sounders, tappers or probes, are tried and true tools that detect termite damage by producing a change in sound when tapped against affected areas. Keep an ear out for anomalies indicated by a hollow sound when systematically tapping against areas like wooden beams, skirting frames, doorframes and window frames, that could indicate termite damage.

Moisture meters scan walls for build-ups of moisture which can indicate the presence of termites which excrete moisture-filled ‘mud’. It could also be a warning that there is damaged wood or a leak which needs to be fixed before it attracts termites. If damage is detected with a donger but no moisture is present, this may indicate a previous termite infestation.

Thermal cameras detect the heat and energy emitted by termites, enabling early detection of a termite infestation without needing to open up any wooden structures. This non-invasive tool allows you to pinpoint the exact location of the termite nest without causing undue damage to your client’s property.
